about the event
This one’s for Australia.
On Australia Day, January 26, DOSC in downtown Edmonton will be hosting an Australian Bushfire Fundraiser with the proceeds going to help Australia recover from the devastating fire it’s been battling since November. The bushfires have consumed 12 million acres of land—almost the area of Nova Scotia. To compare, the Fort McMurray fires of 2016 burned 1.4 million acres.
“We felt the need to support the fire relief efforts somehow,” says Bianca Condren, general manager who herself hails from The Gold Coast, Queensland (East Coast) of Australia. “It really hit home for me, regardless if i have been directly affected or not and I know a lot of Albertans can sympathize with what’s going on in Australia.”
This event will benefit Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, the park lies off the mainland of South Australia, southwest of Adelaide. Over a third of the island is protected in nature reserves, home to native wildlife like sea lions, koalas and diverse bird species. The Fires on the island, have so far burned through 155,000 hectares – about one third of the island. Donations will cover veterinary costs, koala milk and supplements, extra holding/rehabilitation enclosures, as well as setting up a building to hold supplies to treat these animals.
Australian coastal land provides seafood, and its vast farmland—the same area under threat of fire—produces lamb and beef. Foodies can celebrate Australia day with a three-course set menu paired with Australian wine. Sunday’s event will also feature a live set by local acoustic artist, Dennis Bouwman, as well as a silent auction, with items donated by several local companies such as: Dorinku Osaka, Rad Originals, Anonymous Salon, Khrome Nail Bar, PWS Wine, Finns Seafood, Beam Suntory.
Tickets are available online via Eventbrite.
